The Kestrel Hide

The Kestrel Hide faces our biggest sky. In front of you is rough, tussocky grassland that we manage exactly for this: cut late, left ragged, and consequently full of voles. The kestrels know it — this is their larder, and hovering birds at eye-line distance are the everyday show. Buzzards loaf on the fence posts, red kites drift the thermals over the ridge, and green woodpeckers bound across to ant on the short turf.

It's a hide that rewards patience and scanning: sparrowhawks slicing the hedge line, stonechats in the winter months, and towards the end of an evening session the chance of a barn owl ghosting the far margin. Bring binoculars even if you're mainly photographing — the action develops at distance before it comes close.

Working distances to the main perches and hover zones run roughly 15–40 metres — a 300mm lens does well, 500mm fills the frame. There are padded shelf rests, room for a tripod head, and space for a companion who'd rather just watch. Spring: display flights and the busiest hunting as the kestrels feed young. Summer: newly fledged falcons learning the trade — comedy and drama in equal parts.
