Estate kindling
Hand-split, barn-dried kindling from our own woodland. Products appear here once the Kindling collection is set up in Shopify admin.
Planted and nurtured in the South Downs National Park. Seasoned two full years in traditional barns — never kiln dried — for a cleaner, hotter, low-smoke burn. £16.99 a box, free UK delivery.
Most kindling in Britain is kiln-dried softwood — spruce and pine, rushed dry in a gas-fired kiln, bagged in plastic. Ours is the opposite in every particular. It's ash, the king of firewood: a dense hardwood that burns hotter and up to three times longer than softwood, so you use fewer sticks to get a fire away. It's air dried, never kiln dried — split by hand and stacked in our traditional Sussex barns for a full 24 months, until it's below 20% moisture the patient way, with no kiln energy spent. And it comes in a printed kraft box that's entirely plastic-free and good enough to give.
Working the woods — felling, thinning, replanting — is how we keep them healthy and full of life. The woodpeckers and marsh tits in our Woodpecker Hide are, in a very real sense, customers of the kindling business.
One box, done properly: approx. 3kg of 24-month aged Sussex ash for £16.99, delivered free UK-wide — with twin and four-box bundles that save you money and spare the courier a journey. Browse the shop — and if you're staying with us, you'll find a basket already waiting by the stove.
Two years in the barn. Never a day in a kiln. You can hear the difference when it snaps.
