Hawksfold First Fire Bundle - Ash Hardwood

Some moments call for ease. The First Fire Bundle was created for those first fires of the season — the evenings when warmth is needed quickly and reliably. It’s everything required to light a steady, clean-burning fire, gathered and prepared on our estate on the Surrey–Sussex border.

Our kindling is made from ash hardwood — the same timber we use in our cottages and barns. Once cut, it’s split by hand into small, even pieces that catch easily but still burn with substance. We dry it slowly in our traditional barns, letting the cool air from the South Downs move through the stacked wood until it’s light, dry, and ready to burn clean. Each piece lights easily and burns hot, giving your main logs the right start.

Alongside the kindling, every bundle includes fifty of our natural firelighters. They’re made from compressed wood shavings and wax — simple, dependable, and free from chemical odours. One or two pieces are enough to set a fire going, whether you’re lighting a wood stove, fire pit, pizza oven, or open hearth. The two together — dry ash kindling and natural lighters — take the uncertainty out of lighting a new fire. Everything is ready, clean, and stored in one place.

This is the same preparation we use ourselves — in the Hawksfold cottages, the outdoor ovens, and our own farmhouse hearths. It’s not about novelty; it’s about good preparation and proven materials. Ash is naturally strong and steady: it splits cleanly, lights easily, and burns with little smoke. Combined with our air-drying process, it gives consistent results in every setting.

Each bundle is measured, packed, and checked by hand on the estate. The kindling is supplied in a 3kg estate box: neat, breathable, and easy to store beside the fire. The firelighters are boxed for convenience, ready to use straight from the pack. Nothing unnecessary, just sound materials that do their job well.
